Product Description
This is our 3% cordycepin extract, one of the strongest extracts on the market. Most cordyceps products on the market contain under 1% cordycepin, and usually less than 0.5%. Cordyceps is a powerful, strange looking parasitic fungus from Tibet and China. In the past, it was only available to royalty due to it's high price-tag. According to the wide range of research on cordyceps, it's nearly impossible to not benefit in some way from this powerful mushroom.
One of the most powerful aspects of cordycepin is it's anti-cancer effect. In one study, cordycepin promoted anti-proliferation and apoptotic effects in both cell lines of oral squamous cell carcinoma in a dose dependent manner. (1) Another study showed that it induced apoptosis in human colon cancer cells. The important P53 and Bax genes increased, as did DR3, caspase-8, caspase-1, cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved PARP expression. (2) Cordycepin's anti-cancer effects don't stop there though. Studies show anti-tumor, apoptotic effects in glioma cells, thyroid cancer cells, prostate cancer cells, and liver cancer cells! (3,4,5,6)
There were multiple mechanisms through which cordycepin did it's impressive work. Studies show an inhibiting action on matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 and MMP-9, accelerating the secretion of metalloproteinase (TIMP)-1 and TIMP-2 from cancer cells, stimulating the adenosine A3 receptor, inhibiting platelet aggregation induced by cancer cells, glycogen synthase kinase activation and cyclin D1 suppression. This also helps impede the production of the mRNA molecules, which helps eliminate a cancer cell's ability to function. (7,8) Gliocladicillins A and B were seen to inhibit the growth of tumor cells and cause self destruction. (9)
Another interesting aspect of cordyceps that's never discussed or really known is it's ability to improve bone health. One study made it clear that cordycepin improved bone health through multiple actions. The study was done in vivo, and decreased the generation of ROS, upregulated interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF-8), and suppressed other inflammatory, degenerating factors. It was concluded that cordycepin helps prevent bone loss, rescues bone microarchitecture, and restores bone mineralization. (10) Another study made it clear that cordycepin has inhibitory effects on osteoclast differentiation. (11)
Numerous pieces of research have shown the positive effects cordyceps has on both type 1 and 2 diabetes. One clinical study gave subjects 3 grams of a plain (much less potent than 50% polysaccharide extract) cordyceps extract and compared it to mainstream medical intervention. In the cordyceps group, 95% of patients showed improved blood glucose levels, compared to 54% in the medical treatment group. (12,13,14) Another study showed similar effects. It seems that cordyceps increases insulin sensitivity and regulates enzymes related to the output of glucose. Studies showed effects on several important markers like IRS-1, pIRS-1, AKT, pAKT, and GLUT-4. (15)
It's also known that cordyceps helps to improve the health of the lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, and improve oxygen utilization and ATP production. This is one of the reasons that many athletes love and use this mushroom. One common thing that some people notice is deeper, clearer breathing. Several doctors studies the effects cordyceps had on the kidneys. The results that were almost shocking, showing improved effects in patients with kidney failure, kidney damage, and general kidney health. (16)
Cordyceps also may help improve heart arrhythmias, increase coronary and cerebral circulation, reduce vascular resistance, inhibit platelet aggregation, and cause a decrease in the amount of myocardial oxygen needed. This would make cordyceps a really good preventative medicine as well. (17) People suffering from depression or low energy may benefit from cordyceps also. It is not well known for depression, but the increased oxygen, atp, along with some effects on dopamine may help out with some symptoms. Cordyceps also has good anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune strengthening effects as well.
Suggested use: 200mgs twice a day on an empty stomach.
